Dr Paul Kelly

Paul has led numerous evaluations from local to national to global levels, collaborating with the WHO, National and Local Governments, and the health and charity sector to deliver high quality pragmatic evaluation of physical activity promotion. He specialises in measurement approaches to complement evaluation activities.

Paul is based at the University of Edinburgh, where he is a Reader in Physical Activity for Health. He previously worked at the University of Oxford where he completed his PhD in using wearable cameras to validate self-reported walking and cycling tools.

Dr Karen Milton

Karen has spent her whole career evaluating physical activity interventions. She has evaluated interventions in a range of sectors and settings including healthcare, transport, workplaces, schools and communities, as well as in several different countries and contexts.

Karen has a PhD in public health policy and a keen interest in bridging the gap between research, policy and practice. She brings a policy lens and a qualitative perspective to the pragmatic evaluation team. Her current positon is Associate Professor in Public Health in the Norwich Medical School at the University of East Anglia. In this role she is responsible for teaching public health across the 5-year medical curriculum; a curriculum that now has physical activity embedded within it!

Dr Justin Richards

Justin has completed numerous evaluations of physical activity initiatives in Africa, Europe, and the Pacific region. He originally trained as a physiotherapist, but now works in evaluation design in academia, the public sector and the UN system.

Justin has a D.Phil in Public Health from the University of Oxford and his ongoing research focuses on physical activity interventions and associated mental health outcomes in vulnerable populations. He has a particular interest in the rigorous evaluation of sport-for-development interventions and was a founding editor of the Journal of Sport for Development. Justin is currently employed as the Academic Lead at Ihi Aotearoa Sport New Zealand and Associate Professor in Physical Activity and Wellbeing at Victoria University Wellington.
